Tax year and reclaims
Insights → Tax year gathers one calendar year for your tax return: the dividends you received with the tax withheld at source, every sale with its cost and gain, and the withholding refunds you are claiming back.
Your tax year
Choose the year at the top of the page: the last three full years or the current one so far. Everything is across all your accounts and in the currency of your tax residence, each amount converted at the exchange rate of its own day (the pay date of a dividend, the trade date of a sale).
Four figures open the page:
- Dividends received
- Gross, with the number of payments.
- Withheld at source
- What the paying countries kept, at the rate the app applies to each holding.
- May be reclaimable
- The part withheld above the treaty rate, where the source country refunds it after the fact.
- Realised gain
- Proceeds after fees less the average cost of the shares sold.
A holding you no longer hold has no rate on file, so its payments show “—” for the tax withheld. When some payments lack a rate the totals are a floor and say so (“At least”, with how many payments they cover). Dividends and gains in tax-free accounts are marked, and the figures outside them are given separately.
By source country
The dividends are grouped by the country that withheld the tax: gross, withheld and what may be reclaimable. Dividends from your own country of residence carry no foreign withholding.
Every dividend and every sale Pro
Below, each dividend (date, holding, account, source, gross, rate and amount withheld, what may be reclaimable) and each sale (date, holding, quantity, proceeds, cost and gain). A sale whose shares were bought before your imported history has no cost and shows “—”.
CSV downloads the year as a spreadsheet for you or your accountant. Print or save as PDF opens a print layout of the page.
Reclaims
When a country withholds more than the treaty rate, the difference can often be claimed back from its tax office. The Reclaims section keeps your claims in one place:
- a claim records the country, the year of the dividends, the amount, the currency and where it stands: to file, filed, refunded or rejected, with the filing and refund dates, a reference and a note;
- each claim shows its deadline from the source country’s own rule, with the route to file and the source of the rule (Germany, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy). A country without a sourced rule shows no deadline rather than a guessed one. Where a country gives each payment its own deadline, the date shown is the earliest for that year;
- countries with something reclaimable in the selected year and no claim yet are suggested, with a Track button;
- a claim still to file raises a reminder in the bell two months before its deadline. Once a country’s claim for the current year is tracked, the general deadline reminder for that country stops.
The tracker is your own record: nothing is filed for you, and removing a claim changes nothing with the tax office.
How it is worked out
The calendar year is used whatever your tax year is. Withholding uses the rate the app applies to each holding today; what may be reclaimable follows European withholding and is an estimate that depends on your broker and paperwork. Cost is the average cost of your imported history, fees included. The page is a working paper for your return, not the return, and not tax advice.
