What BorderFolio covers

Last reviewed 2 September 2026

A cross-border portfolio is only as good as the market, currency and residence it is measured in, so this page states all three in full rather than as a headline number. Every exchange below was verified against the live quote API it is priced from; every currency below is one a portfolio can actually be denominated in; every residence below resolves to a withholding rate from the IRS treaty table.

Exchanges and markets

67 exchanges in 49 countries and territories. Each one is a venue where a holding is priced end to end: a live quote, the venue's own quote currency, an authoritative ISIN behind the ticker, and the code a broker statement is likely to print for it. All four have to agree, which is why this list is shorter than a list of exchanges that exist and longer than most trackers' single-market coverage.

London, Tel Aviv and Johannesburg quote in sub-units (pence, agorot, cents); those are normalised to the ISO currency rather than left to inflate a position a hundredfold. A holding on a venue that is not listed here can still be tracked with manually maintained values, so an unusual listing never blocks the rest of the portfolio.

Currencies

Two different lists, because they answer two different questions. Quote currencies are what the exchanges above trade in — 36 of them, and a holding in any of them is priced natively before conversion. Portfolio currencies are what you can measure the whole portfolio in.

Historical transactions are converted at the rate that applied on their own date, never at today's rate. Where the statement prints its own rate for a row — IBKR calls it FXRateToBase — that rate is used, because it is the economics you actually experienced; otherwise the European Central Bank reference rate for that day is used, and a day with no published fixing is reported as such instead of being filled in from a neighbouring day.

This matters more than it sounds: converting a five-year contribution history at one current rate is the single most common error in an investment spreadsheet, and it silently turns currency movement into apparent return. See BorderFolio vs a spreadsheet and the true return methodology.

Countries of tax residence

Withholding is not a property of a fund — it is a property of the fund's domicile times your tax residence. US dividend withholding is resolved for 78 countries of tax residence: every jurisdiction in the IRS treaty table, plus the common no-treaty residences at the statutory 30%. Residence-side dividend and capital-gains rates are prefilled for 59 countries and can be overridden, and countries with a progressive, cantonal, slab or deemed-return regime are left blank rather than guessed at a flat number.

79 residences also have a reference page here, giving the rate, the treaty article, the estate-treaty position and a worked example. The set differs from the in-app selector at the edges — a few pages are published ahead of it, and a few selectable residences have no page yet:

Withholding at source is modelled for US-source dividends and for the ~15% layer lost inside an Irish-domiciled UCITS on its US holdings. Withholding by other source countries — a French or Swiss dividend paid to a non-resident, say — is not modelled yet and is not silently estimated. The full model, its inputs and its limits are on the withholding methodology page; the calculator runs it without an account.

Fund domiciles

Domicile is read from the instrument's real ISIN rather than from where it happens to be listed, so an Irish UCITS bought on Xetra is Irish and a US-listed ETF bought in London is still US-situs. Depositary receipts are resolved to the share class they represent — an ADR's own ISIN is American by construction, which would otherwise charge Israeli or Japanese companies US withholding and count them toward the US estate-tax threshold.

The two domiciles the cross-border layer models in full are US-domiciled funds and stocks (treaty rate on the whole distribution, US-situs estate exposure above USD 60,000) and Irish-domiciled UCITS (~15% withheld inside the fund, no US-situs estate exposure, accumulating share classes recognised as paying no cash distribution). See US ETFs vs Irish UCITS, VT vs VWRA and the US estate tax calculator.

Brokers

There is no supported-broker list to check yours against. A portfolio is built from a statement you upload — PDF, CSV, plain text, screenshot or photo — so a broker with no API, no export and no integration partner still works, which is the normal case outside the US. Broker credentials are never requested and no brokerage connection exists to request them for.

The 37 names below are the labels the app offers for organising accounts, not an integration list. Anything not on it is stored as Other and imports identically.
