Creating an account
An account takes a minute. The first-run setup then asks for one thing (a statement, a broker connection or a list of holdings) and walks you through review and tax settings before the dashboard opens.
Register
Go to app.borderfolio.app/registration. You need an email address and a password of at least eight characters; a first name is optional. Where it is enabled, Continue with Google creates the account from your Google address instead, already confirmed. Google sign-in asks only for your email address and name.
If an account already exists with the same verified email, signing in with Google links to it rather than creating a second one.
Confirm your email
After registering, the app asks you to confirm your address with the link it has just sent. The link is valid for 24 hours. Until you confirm, most of the app is closed; the banner and the confirmation dialog let you resend the email (with a short cooldown between sends) or sign out and use a different address.
Your first portfolio
The setup offers three ways in. They build the same kind of portfolio, and you can use the others later.
- Upload a statement
- Drop a broker statement, an export, a screenshot or a photo. You name the portfolio and set its currency, and optionally the broker and your monthly contribution. See Importing statements.
- Connect your broker
- For Freedom24 and Interactive Brokers, paste read-only API credentials and the app imports positions and trades directly. See Connecting a broker.
- Add holdings manually
- Search for each ticker and type the quantity and average price. Nothing is uploaded at all.
What the setup asks
- Upload. The file is read: the statement, then ticker matching, dividends and the dashboard.
- Review. The positions found are listed with an estimated value. Rows the app is unsure of are marked Needs review, and anything it could not import is listed with the reason. On the Free plan, if the file has more than ten positions, you choose which ten to track.
- Tax. Your tax residence, country of residence and citizenship, whether a W-8BEN is on file with your broker, whether the account is tax-exempt, and your home rates on dividends and capital gains. These settings drive every tax figure; see Residency and settings.
- Done. A summary of the portfolio's value, what you contributed, market growth and the next milestone, and a link to the dashboard.
If the file also contains transactions, the app lists the contributions it found (count, total invested, date range and tickers) for you to confirm before they are added.
Signing in and passwords
Sign in at app.borderfolio.app/login with your email and password, or with Google. Repeated failed attempts bring up a captcha. Forgot password? sends a reset link that is valid for one hour. You can change your password under Profile & Settings → Security.
The guided tour
The first time you open the Overview, Holdings, Tax, Planner and Residency screens, short coach marks point out what matters on each. Each runs once. To see them again, open Profile & Settings → Profile → Guided tour → Show the tour again.
