What this is

A contribution-first portfolio tracker built around you.

BorderFolio imports your broker statements, separates contributions from market returns, preserves a monthly history of the portfolio, and estimates cross-border dividend withholding from fund domicile and your tax residence. The center isn't stock picks or yield — it's you: how much you've put in, how consistently you keep going, and where your current pace leads.

Performance

Know how much came from you — and how much came from the market.

Every tracker shows a return figure. BorderFolio shows what it is made of: the money you deposited, what the market did with it, what the funds paid you, and what fees and withholding took back — with the parts adding up to the balance exactly.

  • Deposits separated from market movement — a bigger balance is never counted as return
  • Dividends and interest on their own line, not folded into growth
  • Broker fees and tax withheld subtracted at the amounts actually paid
  • What you locked in on closed positions, apart from what is still on paper
  • Since inception, year to date, one year, or a range you choose
  • Personal return (XIRR) and portfolio return (TWR) — never approximated to fill a gap

Independence

Know when your portfolio can pay for your life.

Set your monthly spending — BorderFolio computes the portfolio size that sustains it and dates the arrival from your measured pace. Not a retirement questionnaire: the same portfolio value, contribution pace and growth assumption that drive the rest of the app, pointed at one question.

  • Your target at 3–6% withdrawal rates, from the spending you set
  • Years to arrival from your measured pace — every assumption stated on screen
  • What the target is made of: saved, still to contribute, expected growth
  • Coast point — the value where compounding alone finishes the job
  • Dividend coverage of your spending, net of home dividend tax
  • Residence and spending scenarios — see the timeline move before you move

Cross-border context

You moved somewhere with no income tax. The US still takes 30%.

Withholding happens at the fund's country, before the money reaches you — a treaty can reduce it, and the UAE doesn't have one with the US. BorderFolio works that out per fund, in dollars, on the portfolio you already hold. Where you file matters too, and it's counted when it applies.

  • Where it leaks, fund by fundExemptions honoured — a treasury fund isn't taxed like a world equity fund.
  • What changes with the Irish version of the same fundBoth sides — the withholding it saves and the higher fee it charges. Often that still nets out against switching.
  • When you cross the $60,000 US estate thresholdNon-residents holding US funds above it can face up to 40%. Almost nobody is told.

Every estimate shows its assumptions and sources. No rankings, no buy lists — you choose what to compare.

Estimated dividend tax drag UAE · sample
$575 / yr on $1,918 in dividends

All of it withholding — the UAE adds nothing on top.

$575 $1,343
withheld at source · US, 30%, no treaty $575
tax at home · UAE, no personal income tax $0
kept $1,343

A comparison you pick

VT US · 30% + 0.06% fee $667/yr
vs
VWRA Ireland · 15% + 0.14% fee $502/yr
net of both +$165/yr

…and when it isn’t worth it

QQQ US · 30% + 0.18% fee $494/yr
vs
CNDX Ireland · 15% + 0.30% fee $569/yr
net of both −$75/yr

Same holding, a different fund. Barely any dividends to withhold, and the higher fee is charged on the whole balance — so the switch loses money. You get told that too.

Questions

The things people ask before signing up.

Does BorderFolio connect to my broker?

Never with a password — and never required. One broker, Freedom24, can optionally be connected with read-only API keys you generate and can revoke in the broker's own cabinet; positions and trades then sync nightly. Everyone else comes in by uploading a statement or entering holdings by hand — and nothing in the product can trade or move money either way. Tracking a Freedom24 account →

Can it import an Interactive Brokers statement?

Yes. Upload an IBKR Activity Statement as PDF or CSV. Positions, purchases, dividends and the commissions on each trade are extracted, shown for review, and previously imported transactions are skipped. How import works → Tracking an IBKR account →

What happens if I upload overlapping statements?

Nothing gets duplicated. Transactions already on record are matched and listed as skipped, and a statement that ends earlier than the last one applied won't overwrite newer position quantities.

How does it separate contributions from market returns?

Each purchase is stored as a dated contribution, and market movement is measured separately by revaluing the positions you hold. Dividends, broker fees and tax withheld each get their own line, and the parts have to add up to the portfolio value or the breakdown isn't shown. The formula →

Where do the tax numbers come from?

Per instrument: the fund's domicile and the treaty status with the tax residence you configure give the rate withheld at source; your residence rate gives the second step. Exemptions are honoured — a Treasury fund isn't taxed like a world equity fund. Methodology & sources →

Is my exchange and my currency supported?

Holdings are priced on 67 exchanges across 49 countries and territories — the US, Canada and Latin America, the UK, Ireland, all of continental Europe including the Nordics and Baltics, Asia-Pacific from Tokyo to Ho Chi Minh, plus Tel Aviv, Tadawul, Qatar, Johannesburg and Cairo. The portfolio itself can be kept in any of 19 currencies. The full coverage list →

My market or residence isn’t covered. Can you add it?

Usually, yes — most of the current list was added because someone asked. Send the market, currency or residence you need to admin@borderfolio.app; what is being worked on next is on the roadmap. The roadmap →

I already track this in a spreadsheet. Is it worth moving?

Only if the sheet stopped being updated — a sheet you enjoy maintaining is a better model than any fixed one. If it did stop, you don't rebuild the formulas: you re-import the statements it was typed from, and upload the sheet itself for the years they no longer cover. Moving a spreadsheet across →

Is this tax advice?

No. Every figure is an informational estimate on your own data, with its assumptions shown next to it. BorderFolio is not a broker, investment adviser or tax adviser. Disclaimer →
