BorderFolio/Interactive Brokers portfolio tracker

A portfolio tracker for Interactive Brokers accounts

Last reviewed 31 August 2026

Interactive Brokers reports the account thoroughly. What it does not separate is how much of the balance is money you put in rather than market movement, and what your dividends are worth after withholding at source and tax where you live. BorderFolio reads the Activity Statement you can already export and answers those two — without ever asking for a login, an API key or a Flex token.

What Interactive Brokers already tells you

IBKR is not short of reporting. PortfolioAnalyst produces time-weighted and money-weighted returns, benchmark comparisons and allocation breakdowns; Activity Statements cover any period you ask for, in PDF or CSV; Flex Queries let you automate the export; and the year-end tax forms are as complete as any broker's. If your question is "what did this account do", the answer is already in the account.

This page is about the questions that survive that report — the ones a broker has no reason to answer, because they are about your money rather than about the account.

The three questions an IBKR report leaves open

None of this is a criticism of the broker. A broker reports the account; the account is not the whole of your position when you live in one country, earn in another and hold funds domiciled in a third.

How BorderFolio reads an IBKR account

By reading the statement you can already export — not by connecting to your account.

  1. In Client Portal, generate an Activity Statement for the widest period the account allows, as PDF or CSV.
  2. Upload it. Positions, purchases, dividends and the commissions stated on each trade are extracted.
  3. Review what was read, correct anything misread, confirm. Nothing enters the portfolio before that.

A multi-month export is the point: one January-to-date statement produces current holdings and the contribution history behind them, so the portfolio arrives with months of record instead of starting from today. Uploading an overlapping period later is safe — previously imported transactions are matched and skipped, and an older statement cannot rewind newer quantities. The details are on the IBKR statement import page.

No credentials, no Flex token, no read-only login

There is no field for an IBKR username, no API key, no Flex Web Service token and no OAuth connection — no brokerage integration exists in the product at all. That is a deliberate trade: you re-upload a statement when you want the portfolio refreshed, and in exchange nothing that could reach your brokerage account is ever stored on our side.

The uploaded file itself is deleted automatically within seven days; what remains is the extracted data. The full account of what is stored, who can see it and how to delete it is on the security page.

Several accounts, several currencies

IBKR statements frequently contain more than one account — individual plus IRA, or a joint account alongside it — each with its own holdings section. The extractor reads the account identifier printed in each section header and keeps the sections apart, so the same ticker held in two accounts is not silently collapsed into one position or dropped as a duplicate. That identifier is used during the import only; it is not stored.

You can also keep accounts apart on purpose: Pro tracks up to five portfolios side by side — separate brokers, separate accounts, or separate tax wrappers — plus one combined view. A second broker is just another statement; consolidation does not depend on that broker offering an API.

What it deliberately does not do

Cost

Free covers one portfolio, up to 10 holdings and three document imports a month — enough to run a single IBKR account with a concentrated index portfolio indefinitely. Pro is $9 a month or $79 a year and removes the limits: up to five portfolios, unlimited holdings and imports, full contribution history and analytics, and the complete cross-border layer. See pricing.
