BorderFolio/BorderFolio vs Sharesight
BorderFolio vs Sharesight
Last reviewed 31 August 2026
These two products overlap less than the category name suggests. Sharesight is a broad, mature tracker with broker automation and country-specific tax reporting. BorderFolio is a narrow one built around two questions — how much of the balance is money you put in, and what a dividend is worth after crossing a border. This page sets both out, including the places where Sharesight is plainly the better choice.
The short version
Sharesight is a mature, broad portfolio tracker with automated broker imports and tax reporting built for filing in specific countries. BorderFolio is a narrow one: contributions treated as a first-class object, and cross-border dividend taxation modelled per instrument from fund domicile against the tax residence you configure.
If your question is "what do I tell my accountant in Australia, New Zealand, the UK or Canada", Sharesight is built for that and this product is not. If your question is "how much of this balance is my own money, and what is this dividend actually worth where I live now", that is what BorderFolio exists to answer.
Plans and prices
| BorderFolio | Sharesight (US pricing) | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | 1 portfolio, 10 holdings, 3 document imports a month | 1 portfolio, 10 holdings |
| Entry paid tier | — | Starter, $9.33/mo or $7/mo annually — 1 portfolio, 30 holdings |
| Unlimited holdings from | $9/mo or $79/year — 5 portfolios | Standard, $24/mo or $18/mo annually — 4 portfolios |
| Top tier | — | Premium, $31/mo or $23.25/mo annually — 10 portfolios |
The like-for-like comparison is BorderFolio Pro against Sharesight Standard, because those are the tiers where holdings stop being counted. On annual billing that is $79 a year against $216.
Where Sharesight is the better tool
Stated plainly, because a comparison page that finds no advantages on the other side is an advertisement:
- Automated broker imports. Sharesight advertises automatic trade import from 200+ global brokers. BorderFolio has no broker connection at all, by design — you re-upload a statement when you want the portfolio refreshed.
- Tax reports built for filing. Sharesight produces reports aligned to specific national tax systems and made to be handed to an accountant. Nothing here is a filing figure for any country, and it is not intended to become one.
- Breadth of assets and markets. 60+ markets, hundreds of thousands of instruments, plus crypto, cash accounts and property. BorderFolio covers listed equities, ETFs and funds — and does not import individual bonds, notes or treasuries.
- Maturity. Sharesight has been running since 2006, from Wellington and Sydney, and says it is used by more than 600,000 investors. BorderFolio went public in August 2026 and is built by one person. That is a real difference in risk, and it belongs on this page.
Where BorderFolio is different
- Contributions are the primary object, not a report. Every purchase is stored as a dated contribution, and the split between deposited capital and market growth is a running figure — with pace, streak, gaps and a milestone trajectory built on top of it. What that looks like.
- Cross-border tax is modelled, not just recorded. Both steps, per instrument: the rate withheld at source from the fund's domicile against your residence, then tax at home. Including for a holding you do not own yet, and for the residence you are about to move to. The model.
- Fund domicile is a first-class fact. The same index in a US wrapper and an Irish wrapper are two different propositions for a non-US investor, and the difference is quantified per holding rather than left as folklore. Why.
- The US-situs estate threshold is tracked. A line most investors cross without ever being told.
- Any broker, including ones nobody integrates with. A PDF, a CSV, a text export or a photo of a mobile app is enough; there is no supported-broker list to be missing from.
- No credentials, ever. No login, API key or read-only token — no brokerage integration exists in the product, so there is nothing that could reach your account. What that means in practice.
Which to choose
Choose Sharesight if you file in a country its tax reports target, if you want trades to arrive without touching a file, if you hold property, crypto or cash accounts alongside listed investments, or if the size and age of the company behind the product matters to you.
Choose BorderFolio if you live outside the country your funds are domiciled in, if you want the contribution record rather than only the return, if your broker is not on anyone's integration list, if you would rather no service held anything that could reach your brokerage account, or if unlimited holdings for $79 a year is the constraint that decides it.
They are not mutually exclusive, and running both for a year costs less than most people's brokerage spread. The free tier here needs no card.
